Strafe Around Corners

By: Sno

When taking corners in an FPS, there's a certain way I like to do it. It gives you a chance to see what's around the corner and already have your sights on an enemy if they are there before you're even all the way around. I strafe around the corner. It's hard to explain...but I'll try. Say you're coming up on a left turn. When approaching the corner, start turning left, while STRAFING RIGHT and while going forward (only certain key combos will allow this. I can because the keyboard has strafe keys and my mouse looks left to right.) This will take you at an angle towards the peak of the corner. If you see an enemy, try to aim while still doing the strafe/turn/forward movement.
Corner StrafePardon the crude drawing. I'm horrible with Paint.
Keep practicing and eventually you will be able to do it smoothly. I now couldn't keep from doing it if I tried. It really is useful, and gives you a slight upperhand during an ambush.

The very most important rule in any FPS is, and always will be, one thing: KEEP MOVING! I can NOT stress this enough. The number one cause for frags in the FPS universe: stationary targets. In any game, you want to always move. When I say always, I mean ALWAYS! Most games, to pick up a weapon or pickup, all you have to do is run over it, don't pause on a pickup, it just makes you an easier target. And don't stop to do something like switch weapons! An excellent gamer should be able to use each finger individually. They can have each finger doing something different at the same time if need be. "Well I have to move my whole hand to press the button!" you say? Change your config. Every command should be within reach without moving your hand. You also don't want to make important keys only accessable by a movement-control finger. If you use your W key MOVE FORWARD, DON'T make your switch weapon the 2 key. Be wise. And never stop to aim. And if someone is firing at you, and you don't know where, don't stand there an look around, move around randomly WHILE looking. Being chased? Not only move forward/backward, but side-to-side randomly too. And if you need to stay in a small area for any length of time (ie: waiting for an elevator), do the "I GOTTA PEE" dance. Just keep moving! I can guarantee that you'd die at LEAST 10% less of the time.

What's That?

Be aware of sounds. If your hunting someone, and hear a watersplash, and there's only one pond in the level, go there (or avoid it if your low on health:-)). Hear someone pick up a shotgun? Find it. I guess a tip that goes alongside with this one is to know your levels too. Remember: this works two ways. Be aware of your OWN sounds. You can also use your own sounds to trick someone. If they are hunting you, find an elevator, step on it, then right off. They will think they know where you are, but you will now know where THEY are (or will be shortly), so prepare for an ambush!

Strafers = Winners

On a computer game, if you are a keyboard n mouse jockey, one of the best configurations is to have your forward/back/strafe left/strafe right keys on the keyboard, and your mouse is your look (up, down, left, right). Remember, you really CAN press more than one or two controls at a time! *GASP!* Find the best way to move around, by combining forward, strafe, and look. And remember, strafers = winners. It's a highly under-rated control in newbie-land, but a much-loved hero in pro-land. Just imagine, you can dodge and keep on the move AND keep your sights on your target. Truly is amazing. Learn to love it.
